Why do leaders who seem to have all the right knowledge still struggle to lead effective teams? Jonathan Perez, Founder and CEO of The Conscious Teams Project, shares the personal breakthrough that led him to answer that question.
Since 2018, Jonathan has coached hundreds of leaders on leadership development and team dynamics. Over and over, he noticed the same pattern: leaders understood exactly what they should be doing, yet nothing changed. The missing piece wasn't more information — it was survival mode.
As Jonathan went deeper into his own personal journey, he realized how much he himself operated from survival mode. Once he recognized it in himself, he started seeing it everywhere, especially in the leaders and teams he coached. Even with all the right knowledge, their creativity and leadership stayed stunted because their nervous systems were stuck in survival.
That realization changed everything. When Jonathan worked on getting himself out of survival mode, his own creativity and sense of authenticity opened up in ways he hadn't thought possible. It became clear: training alone isn't enough if a team's nervous system is still in survival mode.
This insight became the foundation of the Conscious Teams Project. Rather than just teaching leadership concepts, the work focuses on helping teams recognize when they're in survival mode — individually and collectively — and giving them real tools and experiences to get out of it.
From there, the focus shifts to building trust: honest feedback, constructive (rather than destructive) conflict, and clearing tension before it festers. Over time, teams learn to self-diagnose and self-correct — recognizing survival states and repairing trust on their own.
The payoff of doing this work is exponential. Science shows that survival mode shuts down the parts of the brain responsible for creativity and executive function. Getting a team out of that state doesn't just improve morale — it unleashes genuine creative and cognitive capacity, leading to a real quantum leap in performance.
If this resonates — if your team feels stuck in survival mode and you sense there's untapped potential and trust to build — we invite you to reach out and schedule a call.
